Ireland – what next for the North?
10 April at 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
For two years, the North of Ireland has sunk ever deeper into political crisis. With Sinn Féin and the Democratic Unionist Party at a political impasse, there has been no government at Stormont since early 2017 – and yet the bigoted DUP wields more influence than ever by propping up Theresa May at Westminster.
Meanwhile, the looming threat of a hard border between North and South after the Brexit process has highlighted the reality of British occupation and reawoken interest in a United Ireland. And after the stunning victory of abortion rights in the Republic, #RepealThe8th campaigners have pledged: ‘The North is next!’ The sectarian stasis built into the Northern state’s inherent structures, and cemented in place by the Good Friday Agreement, now faces fresh challenges from a politics of gender and sexual liberation that has the potential to undermine the old regime.
Mark Foley will introduce a discussion about the perils and promises of the current moment in the North of Ireland.
