How to defund the police: strategies for abolition

23 July at 7:00 pm9:00 pm

The return of the Black Lives Matter movement after the murder of George Floyd has shone a spotlight on the violence of the police. This time, the question of the legitimacy of policing itself has come to the fore. Campaigners have made the demand “defund the police” and the Minneapolis City Council took the step of actually disbanding the city’s police department in its current form. For perhaps the first time, the idea that the police should not exist at all has begun to sound credible in the mainstream.
This month, East London rs21 looks at the growing movement against the police in the US, and asks strategies would enable the building of a generalised movement for the abolition of the police in Britain.
