Discussing Colin Barker on aristocracy of labour theories
13 August at 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Please join our discussion on Colin Barker’s talk on theories of the labour aristocracy.
The idea of a “labour aristocracy” – a section of workers who supported capitalism because they are relatively privileged – has been drawn on to explain everything from reformism to support for imperialism. Today it finds new echoes in discussions about the politics of workers who own their homes, or the carbon footprint of workers in richer countries and their attitudes to decarbonisation.
We’ll be discussing the different forms these theories take, their strengths and weaknesses, and how useful they are today.
If you have time please listen to the audio recording of Colin Barker’s talk on YouTube.
