Alienation, or why capitalism is bad for you

30 August at 2:00 pm4:00 pm

Alienation was the concept Marx used, at least in his early writings, to describe the way in which capitalist production shaped the lives and experiences of all those who live within it.
For Marx, human labour was potentially a fulfilling and liberating activity, in which we transform ourselves while transforming the world around us. However, under capitalism work is anything but fulfilling, and instead appears as something external, dominating, and outside of our control. This comes to colour our relationships with others, our natural and built environment, and ultimately ourselves.
These ideas remain an inspiration for many today, but their discovery and reinterpretation by different groups of Marxists in the twentieth century led to some significant debates and controversies. These debates were often heavily influenced by the specific context, and often as much about the needs of specific political movements as about theory.
What, then, do we gain from talking about alienation today?
